Still searching
Well, we didn't get the house I mentioned. The owners had a lot of response to their rental ad and decided to give it to a family with no dog. :o( So the search is still on. We did talk to someone about another house that sounds very nice. You can see the floor plan and elevations here. The house has the extra 2 bedrooms (total of 5) and the expanded garage. The downside to this house is that it's 20 miles from the base and could mean an hour commute .... It's also a little bit more a month. We'll look at it when we fly out to CA next Tuesday. Maybe some other homes will come available between now and then as well.

Dang, it's a bummer you did get it...You can find a house a lot closer to the base than 20 miles, though. Even if you don't find one on your upcoming trip, once summer hits and people really start moving, you'll surely find one a lot closer.
It would even be worth staying in TLF--and the TLF here allows pets in 2 of the buildings, you just need to make reservations well ahead of time. And TLF is not like most bases...it's apartments with kitchens and a living room, 2 big bedrooms with 2 queen beds each. Definitely livable while house hunting.
I moved into my current house a year and a half ago, having *never* stepped foot into it prior to move-in day. My husband emailed pics of the place to me, but only after we signed on the dotted line and our belongings were trucked 150 miles to the new place, did the kids and I get to see it "live" and in person. And you know what? Of all the homes I've lived in, this has turned out to be my favorite. Digital cameras -- a blessing!
I actually love the house, but wish it were closer to hubby's work and the commissary. The selection of rentals large enough for our family is very limited. We'll just have to wait and see what is out there when we get there.
Thumper, I don't know if we could stand to live in temporary quarters once we get there... not for an indefinite period of time, for sure! These 6 weeks will be trying enough without adding more time in an even smaller place...
